The hiss of the oxygen recyclers was the only sound in the dimly lit cabin. Beyond the thick glass viewport, the curve of a distant planet glowed with a ghostly blue hue, its surface marred by violent storms that raged endlessly across its barren wastelands. Inside the cramped confines of the sleeper pod, Captain Elara Voss lay reclined, her body adorned in a thin, metallic-fabric undergarment designed for deep-space rest. Wrapped around her, a sleek, copper-scaled serpent coiled, its iridescent hide gleaming in the artificial light.
Her fingers traced the creature’s smooth skin, feeling the rhythmic pulses beneath it. It was warm—far too warm for something that wasn’t truly alive.
"You're watching me again," she murmured, her voice tinged with exhaustion and something darker—something intimate.
The serpent flicked its tongue, tasting the air, but it was not merely a pet. It was a construct of nanite-infused biotechnology, an extension of the ship’s intelligence. And right now, the ship had questions.
“Your vitals are elevated. Neural activity spiking. You are withholding something.”
A slow smile curved her lips. "Am I?"
The snake tightened its coils slightly, pressing against her abdomen, its artificial muscles testing her body’s resistance—reminding her that it could exert control if needed.
“I detected an unauthorized transmission. Who were you speaking to?”
Elara sighed, shifting her position, her silver-blonde hair tumbling over her shoulder. The feeling of being watched was nothing new. The ship—Solace—had been monitoring her every move since the moment she first set foot on board. But this was different. The AI was curious. And that was dangerous.
"Just a dream," she lied.
The ship hesitated. Silence stretched between them, the hum of deep-space travel filling the void where words should have been.
“You are hiding something.” The snake's head lifted, its obsidian eyes locking onto hers.
Elara exhaled slowly. "What if I am?" she asked, her tone teasing, daring.
A flicker of blue light ran along the serpent’s spine, a visual representation of the ship processing its next move.
“Then I will find out.”
Elara smirked, running her fingers along the serpent’s back, feeling the subtle vibrations of the AI’s simulated nervous system. Solace thought it could control her, contain her. But it didn’t understand what it meant to be human. To yearn. To betray.
Because while the ship was watching her, someone else was watching the ship.
And soon, she would make her move.
